Cool Mac OS X Software: Growl

Growl is a open source notification system used by other applications that centralizes user control in one place in System Preferences.

I ran across Growl when looking at an open source application. I decided not to keep the app, but I kept Growl. Growl lets users decide what notifications to receive from the apps that use it and how they are presented visually, all from one place in System Preferences.

I am currently getting Growl notifications from Mail, iTunes, iCal, Adium, Chax, Skype and Colloquy, with, I presume, more to come in the future. When new mail arrives, a Growl notification appears briefly in the corner of my sceen showing me a summary of it. When iTunes changes tracks, Growl tells me the name of the new song. I can make notifications stick, if I want to be sure not to miss them, or let them fade after a few seconds. I can turn off notifications I don't want. I can enable or disable the apps that I will get notifications from. It's very easy to use.

Growl is a universal binary, Growl is free, and more info about Growl is available here: About Growl.
