Apple downgraded the 17-inch iMac G5
Apple announced a new 17-inch iMac G5 running at
1.9GHz and that's the only 17-inch option now. My old 17-inch iMac G5 runs at
2.0GHz.
Apple's new iMac G5 computers have one
user-accessible memory slot. My old 17-inch iMac G5 has two. I upgraded my old
iMac G5 to 2GB with 2 x 1GB DIMMS from Crucial.com for $238.69. They don't
currently sell a 2GB DIMM for the new iMac G5, but Apple does—for
$1200.
To sum up, the new 17-inch iMac
G5 is slower than the old one, has half the number of user-accessible memory
slots, and costs almost $1000 more to upgrade to 2+GB. In exchange, you do get
512MB additional memory and a built-in iSight camera and a
remote.
