Congressman McDermott (D-WA) supports the petition to change the "No Child Left Behind Act"The No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to
send student's private information — names, addresses, and phone numbers
— directly to the military unless the student "opts out", but many schools
don't inform students that they have the right to opt out. The military uses
the information to recruit students. You can sign a
petition to change the No Child Left Behind Act at Military Free
Zone.
Students who wish to "opt out" and have their
names removed from the list given to the military by their schools can find an
appropriate "opt out" form here: Opt
Out!
Underground Action Alliance said that "Anti-Flag [joined] Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) and Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) on the steps of the Capitol Building at Cannon Terrace in Washington, DC at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, to oppose Section 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act, which allows the military to violate young people’s privacy and aids the military in predatory recruitment practices." McDermott is quoted as saying, "No Child Left Behind was supposed to mean academic opportunity, but the federal law permits a military recruiter to obtain private student information, and that is not right. I support our military, but young people, not government, should make the decision about whether to explore a military career." Posted: Saturday - March 19, 2005 at 12:55 AM |
