44th known Mersenne prime number found by the GIMPS project
The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS)
project announced the discovery on Sept. 4 of the 44th known Mersenne prime. It
is also the largest known prime of any kind:
232,582,657-1.
This is the 10th record prime for the GIMPS
distributed computing project and the second discovery by the Central Missouri
State University team. This new prime is 9,808,358 digits long. There is a
$100,000 prize for the discovery of a 10 million digit prime.
