Possible discovery of the 44th known Mersenne Prime
George Woltman announced yesterday that a
computer participating in the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has
reported finding the 44th known Mersenne Prime. More details will be
forthcoming when the discovery has been verified.
The GIMPS project was founded by George Woltman
in 1996. As of June, 2006, the GIMPS virtual supercomputer had a sustained
throughput of over 20 TFLOPS, making it one of the most powerful supercomputers
in the world.
