Stardust @ HomeStardust@home is a distributed science project to
identify interstellar dust particles in the aerogel returned by the Stardust
spacecraft following its rendezvous with Comet Wild 2.
Unlike SETI@home, which uses the distributed
computing power of many computers, Stardust@home will use the power of many human
brains to try to recognize the estimated 45 grains of interstellar dust
particles in the collector. An automated microscope is used to scan the aerogel
and a web-based virtual microscope will be used by internet volunteers to search
the scanned images for the cosmic dust. 30,000 person hours will be needed to
look through the images.
A server load test is currently underway and Planetary Society members participating in that test are being trained and certified for participation in the real search that will follow in May. To participate in the load test go to http://ultraman.ssl.berkeley.edu/~vonkorff/PlanetarySociety/ today and click Train. ![]() Posted: Saturday - April 29, 2006 at 09:09 AM |
