Westboro Baptist Church members have been thanking God for soldiers' deathsAccording to 365Gay.com news, Rev. Fred Phelps and his clan
have lately been demonstrating at the funerals of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq,
rather than at the funerals of gay people.
Phelps and his followers, who are mostly members
of his family, have been holding signs saying "God blew up the troops", "America
is doomed", and "God Hates America". They believe that God is punishing America
for the unsolved 1995 bombing of the Phelps
church.
It doesn't seem at all surprising that someone would bomb Phelps's church when he is continually parading his peculiar brand of hatred around the country. I figured he was lucky to get out of Pittsburgh alive when he was here to protest at the funeral of Fred Rogers. In addition to thanking God for U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, Phelps's web site thanks God "for the bombing of London's subway ... wherein dozens were killed and hundreds seriously injured." "Wish it was many more", he says. Phelps is an extremist, but lots of fundamentalist Christians are sympathetic with his beliefs. Fundamentalist Christianity is a dangerous idea and is inconsistent with the principles of Constitutional democracy in America. Posted: Friday - August 05, 2005 at 12:00 AM |
