Garry Kasparov retired from professional chess play

The Associated Press reported that Garry Kasparov, the number one chess player in the world, has retired from professional play. He intends to write books and to become more involved in Russian politics.

Michiel Abeln, reporting from Linares 2005 where Kasparov played his last professional game, said, "There is nothing more to achieve, he does not see any reunification coming and there [are] no goals left."

British Chess Magazine said, "Garry Kasparov's retirement aged 41 will come as a blow to the standing of professional chess as he remains chess's one major celebrity in the world at large."
