High Gasoline Prices are Good
High gas prices motivate consumers to purchase
more fuel efficient vehicles, which motivates car makers to produce more fuel
efficient vehicles. This is good for the environment. It's also good for
national security that we become more energy independent.
The popularity of big, fuel wasting vehicles,
mostly purchased by people who don't really need them, is evidence that many
people are unwilling to act in the best interests of our nation unless they are
economically forced to do so. Their personal economic self-interests have to be
aligned with what is good for the nation before they will do the right thing.
That is what high gas prices do.
It
would be best if this were more explicit. There should be a high environmental
tax on gasoline that should be based on the cost of repairing the negative
impact on the environment of using gasoline. It should be independent of supply
and demand considerations.
