Consumer Reports rates condoms in the latest issue

The latest (Feb.) issue of Consumer Reports contains a report on the strength and reliability of various brands of condoms. The article notes that condoms are the only method of pregnancy prevention that also helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Consumers Union tested 23 kinds of latex condoms and seven of them got the highest rating for strength and reliability. The winners were:

Durex Extra Sensitive Lubricated Latex
Durex Performax Lubricated
LifeStyles Classic Collection Ultra Sensitive Lubricated
TheyFit Lubricated
Trojan Extended Pleasure Climax Control Lubricant
Trojan Non-lubricated
Trojan Ultra Pleasure Spermicidal Lubricant

A sidebar refers the reader to the web site of the American Social Health Association for plain-language instructions (with pictures) on the right way to use a condom.

A second article about birth control options notes that only male and female condoms offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It indicates that condoms are highly effective. The failure rate of male condoms measured by the number of pregnancies per 100 users per year: only 2, if used correctly.
