Google map mashups

Web sites that use Google maps as a basis for mapping a certain type of information are all the rage now. Apparently, they are being called "mashups."

I told you previously about chicagocrime.org, which allows you to interrogate a database of the Chicago police blotter, by location or type of crime or date or what-have-you. It incorporates a Google map mashup to show you where the crimes are happening.

There is also MapSexOffenders.com, which allows you to see a map of where the registered sex offenders live in a certain area.

I just discovered the Gmap Pedometer, which allows you to display a map, double-click waypoints to draw a route on the map, and get the distance of the route.

And there is the Cellreception.com cell phone tower search, which maps the cell phone towers in the area you choose.

There a scores, nay, hundreds more. In fact, there is a blog devoted to them, Google Maps Mania. If you find this sort of thing interesting, check it out regularly, or subscribe to its RSS feed, and stay up to date.
