Three-ring Council

Seattle City Councilman Richard McIver wound up spending two nights in jail after his arrest for roughing up his wife.

I was reading this KING5 report on the matter, and two things jumped out at me:

First, as a condition of his release, he was required to surrender his concealed weapons permit and all his firearms. I don't know why, but it seemed odd that he would carry firearms. But then, as I thought about it, I decided if I were a Seattle City Councilman, I might carry a gun, too. It's not safe downtown, after all.

Second, although I remembered that former City Councilman John Manning had resigned from the Council after HE was arrested for beating up HIS wife, I had forgotten that that is how Mr McIver got on the Council in the first place -- he had been appointed to fill the empty seat. So, instead of being the black quota seat (Sherry Harris before Manning, Sam Smith before Harris) as we all assumed, maybe it has become the wife-beater quota seat.

(The City Council absolutely chooses based on race, sex, and sexual orientation when appointing people to fill vacancies; see, for example, the anti-white, anti-male circus when Sally Clark got appointed to fill the vacancy when Jim Compton resigned a few years ago. Sally Clark was a very good choice in the eyes of our Council -- although she is white, they still got to check off TWO boxes. Plus, as a bonus, she had never had a non-government job, so they saw her as PERFECT!)
