The end of the tourThe Discovery Channel bicycle team, formerly
the US Postal team, winners of eight of the last nine Tours de France, are closing up
shop as of the end of this season.
They couldn't find a new sponsor after
Discovery Channel decided to not renew when the current contract
ends.
That is one mucked-up sport, if the most successful team can't find a sponsor. But who would want to associate their brand name with cheats, and who can guarantee that bicyclists on a given team won't cheat? The new Slipstream team is going to try to offer such a guarantee at the highest level of cycling starting next year, but I notice that their main sponsor is not exactly a household name.
