"A little argy-bargy"
Someone asked why I watch the Tour de France
in the early morning, every morning, when I can sleep in and watch the "extended
coverage" at night.
You might guess that it is because of the
obvious negative of watching a sporting event when I already know the outcome.
And there may be a little of that. But the main reason I do it is so that I can
watch the stages and listen to the commentary of the great Phil Liggett and Paul
Sherwen. At night Versus remixes the audio and drops in the great boobs Al
Trautwig and Bob Roll for most of the commentary. We do not have to suffer
through Trautwig and Roll in the
morning.
I have never been able to
figure out why Versus does this. It's like buying a nice sizzling filet mignon
and throwing it away to eat a cold, congealed cheese and pimento sandwich
instead.
The only thing I can think
of is that Trautwig demanded play-by-play duties when he was hired to replace
the abysmal Kirsten Gum as the host of the pre- and post-stage coverage. To
which I say, I would rather have Kirsten Gum do the wraparound with all race
commentary by Liggett and Sherwen. Al Trautwig can't carry Phil Liggett's
microphone jack. They could hire ANYbody else as host, leave in place the race
commentary by Liggett and Sherwen, and have a much better show. Hey, Aaron
Brown isn't busy right now.
If NBC
hired Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen to announce Sunday Night Football, they
would be the BEST announcing team in the NFL.
