Lament for the End of an Age

A psalm of lamentation. When Derek learned that Apple is moving to Intel x86 microprocessors.

What profit is there in portability?
There are no other processors.
What profit is there in further instruction?
Only the x86 instructions need be known.

Where is the cursor of the C64?
Who strikes the keys of a TI-99?
When shall an Atari 800 boot?
Where have the RF modulators gone?

They have all passed into shadow,
They are dim memories and dusty webpages.
They languish in garages and attics.
Only the Intel processor remains.

As the QWERTY keyboard dominates the input,
As the rectangular monitor dominates the output,
So shall the Intel x86 chip dominate the throughput.
None shall stand!

The children of my children’s children
Will find no other processor.
They will believe there was no other solution,
They will believe it is perfect.

They will say that God created it.
And nobody will think different,
Let alone say different,
For nobody will live who knows different.
