Really Wet DayLas Vegas got hit with some pretty intense rain
today. We had a big and wet low pressure system over southern California pulling
in moisture from the south. Sunday night we had a few sprinkles and Monday I
recorded 0.24 inches of rain and got to show Caroline her first rainbow right at
sunset. Early this morning, I woke up several times to rain pounding on the
roof. About 6:00 a.m. when we get up, we had some more pounding rain. At one
point, the street was running deeper than curb deep and about 15 feet wide with
reddish muddy water. I really didn't want to know where that mud was washing
from. Of course, on the way to day care I followed the mud upstream (it had
almost stopped raining) and it was coming from the park just to the west of us.
Just east of the park is a large stormwater detention basin. I'm glad the mud
wasn't coming from there. Checking the Flood Control
website for the basin, it had about 6 feet of water in it which is
about 20% full. Here are the graphs from noon on the 18th.

I checked the rain gauge again at about 10:00 p.m. (if I was getting paid to do this, I'd check it at midnight). My rain gauge is an Tru-Chek rain gauge given to me during my Skywarn training. It is wedge-shaped so it is easy to read our more common readings of a few hundredths of an inch but still has the maximum capacity of 6 inches with less precision the more rain has collected. Well, I was amazed to find out that gauge was half full which was 2.07 inches. Here is a picture of it. I brought it inside to show Nancy. She was less than impressed.
Hey, I live in one of the world's driest cities. Our annual rainfall is about 4.5 inches per year so to get almost half that in a day is pretty cool. The Weather Service also thought it was pretty cool: RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS, NV 126 AM PDT TUE OCT 18 2005 ...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL SET AT LAS VEGAS...
