A Snakey Day

Wow. Here at my job site at Lincoln county I found a lot of snakes on the road today. The best part is that they were all alive. I moved them off of the road. In order of what I found: Mojave "green" rattlesnake, patch-nosed snake, long-nosed snake, long-nosed snake, ground snake, long-nosed snake, and California kingsnake. Five species and seven total animals. Very cool!

I got video of the Mojave striking past the tongs at me. It was about 3 feet long. The ground snake was the first live ground snake that I have ever found. I'll never forget the time that Anthony dug out a ground snake from the entrails of a roadkill red racer at Lake Mead. I would have used a stick or gloves or something. Anyway, ground snakes are very variable in their color and pattern. This one had a bright orange back and gray sides and belly. It was very pretty and maybe a foot long. The three long-noses were pretty bright and colorful as well. The kingsnake was of the black and white banded variety. And the patch-nose bit me. A lot. Weather was mostly cloudy and in the 70s. I have never seen that many snakes on a dirt road. Very cool day and better than the masses of black beetles a few days ago.
