Mojave Max Emerges

I ran into Christina Gibson from Clark County and she mentioned that Mojave Max had emerged from his burrow on February 20. Wow! That is about a month earlier than usual. The kid who won the emergence contest really gambled with picking a date so far from the average mid-March date.

My first thought, shared by tortoise health expert Dr. Kristin Berry, was that Mojave Max was sick. Often, sick tortoises will emerge from brumation early and try to bask. I guess any increase in body temperature will improve animals and immune response and presumably make the animal feel better.

I hope he's not sick. I used to take care of him when he was at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center. His number was 315 and we called him Lester the Molester for his frequent and boisterous sexual antics. They have him separated from females at Red Rock because he was scaring the children. Or hurting the girl tortoises. Or they didn't want to deal with baby tortoises.
