Winter Raptor Survey

Last week, I spent a week on the roads and tracks of eastern Nevada and western Utah doing a winter raptor survey for the Great Basin Bird Observatory. Highlights of the trip included over a mile or dirt road completely covered with bumper deep tumbleweeds, plenty of cool birds, and an attack by bedbugs (more on that later). Here is a list of the raptors that I saw: Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, Ferruginous Hawk, Rough-legged Hawk, Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Merlin, Prairie Falcon. We also counted ravens and my vehicle counted and collected GPS data on 95 ravens.

The highlight of the trip was the Merlin. It was a life-bird for me and an unusual sighting in that it was the lighter, prairie race (Richardson's). Furthermore, Aaron and I got a great look at the bird perched on a power pole. All in all, it was a great trip. Except for the bedbugs. (Again, I'll get to that later!).
