We're all out!!!

I am so happy to report that my good friend Ryan's last day at SNEI was yesterday. We celebrated with lots of beer and by cutting up Ryan's SNEI American Express card. Ex-SNEI employees celebrating with Ryan include Aaron, Anthony, Stephanie, Paul, and myself. The last few years at SNEI had been pretty demoralizing and stressful for all of us. Long hours (occasionally over 90 hour weeks), many days and weeks staying in motels in towns like Mesquite, Barstow and Needles were difficult but expected.

Much less acceptable was schizophrenic management that ranged from complete ignorance of reality to total micromanagement, suspicion, and paranoia. There was a lot of fishy stuff happening in the office and our loyalty (I think we were all very loyal at some point in the past) was rewarded with an onerous non-competion contract. I could go on and on about the constant barrage of BS from SNEI (don't get me started on AutoTask) but I will save you the gory details.

Anyway, Stephanie and Paul left several years ago, Aaron got out in May 2004, and Ryan, Anthony, and myself left in the last two months (by the way, I have a new job that I probably should blog sometime). Things started getting really bad in the last year. We were getting no new significant projects, you could sense a weird blend of desperation and denial by management ("Hey buddy, we've got some major projects coming up in a few weeks.") In February 2005, I had no work for three weeks and I was forced to use up all of my accrued vacation to keep some semblance of paychecks coming. In May, we were all given 15% pay cuts.

I finally got out in early June seemingly in the nick of time. (Yes, yes, I'll blog about my wonderful new job). I was lucky to have a good job fall into my lap. Even though I knew SNEI was in a tightening downward spiral, I stupidly wasn't proactive or looking hard for a new job. Of course, SNEI had laid off enough people that I was very busy and I also had that non-competition agreement hanging over my head. Luckily, I had a good job drop into my lap (yes, I'll blog about it after the Tour de France).

Anyway, I am so glad that that Ryan got a new job (he's doing microbiology at UNLV). SNEI was just beating him down. Besides, no one wants to walk in front of a D-9 year-after-year even if you are moving tortoises and saving the planet. I just hope that my remaining friends at SNEI including Mark, Michelle, Matt, and Glen manage to get out and get some good jobs. I'd be happy to see SNEI turn around as well. Years ago, SNEI was a great company to work for. However, threats, intimidation, and lawsuits will force away even the most dedicated employees. It's good to be out. And I am ecstatic that my friends are out too.
