On Friday, March 16,
2001, a mission team sponsored by St. John's
Episcopal Church left Murray to travel to
Washington D.C. to minister to the homeless
and other people in need.
The team consisted of: eight Murray
State University students (Bethaney Adams, Tom
Cecil, Ashley Billington, Tony Goins,
Elizabeth Harper, Catherine Hatchett, Gigi
Snowden, and
Shanna Snowden; the Reverend Carolyn
West, vicar of St. John's and campus minister
at Murray State; and Rose Bogal-Allbritten, an
MSU professor and member of St. John's.
The team lived at the Center for
Creative Non-Violence, a homeless shelter
housing more than 750 people.
At the shelter they interacted with
residents, served meals, and worked in the
shelter's archives.
"It was awesome," said
Bethaney. "A
lot of stereotypes were shattered."
The team also worked at
the DC Central Kitchen (a central site that
prepares over 3,000 meals daily for shelter
residents throughout the city); Martha's
table, which provides soup and sandwiches for
homeless people through mobile units that
travel throughout the city to distribute food;
and the Greater DC Boys and Girls Club.
At the Episcopal Church of the
Epiphany, team members worshipped at a service
with the homeless and visited with them during
the church's free breakfast.
The team also spent one day working on
a Habitat for Humanity House in Alexandria,
Virginia.
"We met some incredible people
we'll never forget, people who are
giving up so much to help others," said
Liz.
The
mission trip was made possible through
proceeds from a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper
that was sponsored by the men of St. John's.
