Exobiology

The Drake Equation is an educated guess at the number of possible inhabited worlds where life has evolved to intelligent levels ... Although there is no absolute solution to this equation, it is a generally accepted tool used by scientists ... even by my sparse calculations, there should exist about 700 intelligent civilizations in our galaxy alone. In addition, there are around 500 billion galaxies by latest estimates. That is an enourmous number of civilizations, and a number many cosmologists would say is on the conservative end. Look up at the night sky. This is the only planet with life?

As carbon, nitrogen and oxygen seem to be evenly distributed in the cosmos, it is likely that similar planets would have a similar atmosphere to Earth's. This does not mean that the creatures from any planet would resemble anything on Earth. It is simply a "best guess" for intelligent life, as any other molecular based life apart from either carbon or nitrogen, for example silicon, would be far too heavy to sustain a high metabolisim to feed a large brain. That is, unless astrobiology is dead wrong ... which could be true as well.
