The focus of this class is to learn the basics of spreadsheet, word
processor, database, and presentation software in an educational
context. Typically, students learn text formatting by typing a fake
business letter to a company that doesn't exist and then apply that
knowledge on a social studies report or try to remember the skill a few
weeks later when they need to format a research paper. This course
takes the approach that students can learn technology on an as-needed
basis in the context of subject-matter curriculum.
Teachers tend to teach as they were taught, so this course hopes to
model having its students (in this case, future teachers) learn
technology skills in context. In this case, the context is "how can I
do this in my classroom".
Students are expected to be self-motivated. There are too many
resources provided for anyone to explore all of them during class.
Students should explore the resources and utilize the ones that
interest them, whether it's because that resource applies to what they
hope to teach or covers a technology skill that they hope to learn or
just looks like fun.
