| Joan Osborne, Henry Butler eTown taping Boulder Theater 10/23/06 | | Date Created: Oct 23, 2006, 10:33 PM |
One of the benefits of living in Boulder is that Nick and Helen Forster's eTown program is taped here. I haven't attended one in way too long but after seeing the Forsters at Nissi's Saturday night, it seemed critical to see what eTown was up to with Joan Osborne headlining and including Henry Butler who's moved to Boulder from his destroyed home in New Orleans.
Since the last taping I attended, most of the sponsors have changed and the format has been improved to be a bit more of a concert. The Boulder Theater is still a great place for a concert and the second row stage right ain't bad.
I've known Joan Osborne since her first appearance on the scene. She's one of the most underrated female vocalists out there. Lately she's had a child, been in a movie, and sang with the leftover Grateful Dead. Her latest CD isn't out yet but it was recorded in Nashville and has apparently added country influences to her style.
Joan's guitarist Andrew Carillo was great as were the eTones backing her. She almost equalled Emmylou Harris in her ethereal voice and perfection. Keep an eye and ear out for the release of Pretty Little Stranger on November 14th.
One of the truism of eTown is that even if you don't know the artist playing it, you're going to appreciate them, often quite surprisingly. Henry Butler is such an artist. Why haven't I heard of this guy? He can play keyboards and sing anything. Ray Charles comes to mind and not just because both are blind. The Mardi Gras stuff Butler played was on a different level from even Dr. John and Professor Longhair.
If you don't listen to the broadcasts of eTown on your local radio station, it's time to check out the podcasts. |
