The Cat Empire Boulder Theater 9/29/05

Maybe there's a trend here. Maybe it could even save music as we know it today. The Cat Empire is an Australian band in the mode of Ozomatli and Afro Celt Sound System. That is to say, they are very talented, there's at least six band members, they cross genres and styles with abandon, and they make it work, at least live.

Thursday night (9/29/05) at the Boulder Theater opened with another interesting band. They are a power trio called, Ethereal Plane and they're from Boulder County which means they deserve a mention too. They only have an EP out but if it contains "Top To Bottom" and "The Fresh", you should check it out. They mix rock, funk, jazz, jam band, guitar hero, and gut-bucket bass with a bit of Tangerine Dream. Now that's crossing a few genres and styles and they only have three in the band.

So what do you say about a band from Australia that has six members -- two vocalists, three percussionists, a trumpet, a bass, an organ (played by an androgynous young person), and NO LEAD GUITAR? The one lead vocalist who doubles on percussion looks like Adrien Brody. The other vocalist who plays trumpet looks and acts like Jack Black's younger brother. What a trip.

Their latest CD is called Two Shoes and is still an import, or at least an import price. To add to the mix it was recorded in Havana, Cuba! I haven't heard the CD yet. I suspect that it doesn't capture their magnetic stage act but I'll reserve judgment. In the meantime, be on the lookout for this band.
