Well you have to read fiction sometime, and I've read the first six...
Rowling is rolling along. At least with this number six in the series she doesn't have to link up with the first three like a certain other blockbusting group of books (or screenplays). She does have to prepare for the seventh, and presumably final, year at Hogwarts for Harry Potter and his ultimate battle against the evil Lord V.
Rowling uses some of the same basic themes of Star Wars -- good, evil, love, and the eternal fight. Instead of the Dark Side we have the Dark Arts. You're with us or you're evil. And like the science fiction of Star Wars, we have magic to provide whatever plot twists and devices we need. In fact, with two million advance oders for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and five million or more sold, I'd say J. K. Rowling has learned to use the Imperius Curse or some such magic to get people to buy the hardcover book in such numbers.
And, well, it's a good read. It took about half way before you couldn't put it down but it's as good as the others. As we all have heard, someone important dies in this episode. I figured who was likely and Rowling didn't do a misdirect. After all, the actor who portrayed him died...
Another good thing is that as the characters turn 16, it's about time Rowling started dealing with gender interactions as well as racial (half-blood) issues. She does a good job of working it in without getting too far or too sidetracked. I'd still guess Harry will end up with Hermione though. Will Harry defeat Lord Voldemort? Will Snape be vindicated? Will someone return from the dead or go over to the Death Eaters? Who is R. A. B.? Will the same, once young, actors and actresses be able to continue in the movie versions? And most importantly, will there be life after the seventh Harry Potter book?
Hang in there Potter-maniacs
P.S. Find Robert Langdon... |
