Don't be mislead. It's not really about the future of music. The full title is:
The Future of Music -- Manifesto For The Digital Music Revolution. It's really about how music gets delivered to the consumer. One of the authors (Gerd Leonhard) is a "music futurist" and the other (David Kusek) is a musician. Their only comment on music itself is that it's nearly completely converted to digital, there's more of it than ever, and therefore it seems diffuse and mediocre. The problem is finding what you want.
The authors have a lock on what's going on now with the death throws of the record industry, CD's, and radio as we've known it. The changes are all around us and the recent Supreme Court decision and the industry's attempt to sue their customers into submission will not work. It's a buggy whip company problem for those tuned into the effect of change on old industries. Better change or be left behind.
The idea is that digital music is like water -- there are problems of finding it and getting it to the consumer but basically the comsumer treats it like a given and hardly notices how water is paid for. It's just there. You use it for what you need. You might need someone to help you use it or a service to set it up. You don't want to pay top dollar for whatever the record industry tries to sell you though.
The authors are a bit weaker on what's going to happen in the future and they are smart enough to acknowledge it. If they knew, they should be doing it and cornering the new markets in music. The music industry is still there. It's the record industry that's dying. I just wish this would translate into better music and a musical revolution like the 60's.
