OK, I know I shouldn't be watching TV news and CBS in particular. Old School, mainstream media is hopelessly liberal biased, outdated, and often worse than worthless. Dan Rather and his leftist producers deserved everything they got for attacking the hated Bush with obviously forged documents just before the election and then giving the usual "bias, what bias?" excuse. But I've been waking up in a cozy warm bed at whenever I wake up on Sunday morning and tuning in to CBS's Sunday Morning now for several months, and I find myself sorry for all the ones I've missed. You should watch it too.
This morning they had very nice (for TV news) stories on Jim Cameron's movie on deep ocean diving, a bio of Lyle Lovett, a piece on Ted Kaczinski's brother David and his fight against the death penalty, "Outsider Art", the story behind the movie Hotel Rawanda which is up for an Oscar, and a rerun of my favorite local story -- the Frozen Dead Guy in Nederland, CO. Well, yes, I have an attachment to that last story because I know the guy, Bo Shaffer, who takes care of Bredo Morstoel and he's a great Libertarian and almost made it big on Jay Leno's show recently.
I don't mean to imply that there's no liberal bias on this show. The choice of segments and their presentation (the piece on the death penalty and the Rawanda genocide are illustrative) still show it, but the effect is minimal and certainly less than 60 Minutes and the usual CBS news. Of course you have to exclude the editorial in the middle of the program which is billed as "commentary". Of course it's a leftist african-american woman (not the new Secretary of State, of course) who was railing against Bush's new Secretary of Education who has questioned federal funding of a TV cartoon for children that appears to condone gay marriage. So flip channels for that part -- maybe you'll see the Frontier singing penguins ad or the Quiznos talking baby ad. It even distracted me from reading my latest book, The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History.
So if you'll watch TV at all, this show is the only one to watch on Sunday morning around 8AM. |
