"That one [not treating people who show up in the ER without needing treatment for an emergency] you can blame on the trial lawyers. No sane doctor is going to half-treat you like that. The fact that you knowingly and voluntarily waived all these other treatments won't stop your lawyer later from claiming that (a) you didn't knowingly and voluntary waive them, and (b) the doctors should have known better and treated you anyway.
Unfortunately, our current tort system simply refuses to accept the concept of assumption of risk. That works great for you if you're an irresponsible retard, but it penalizes intelligent people, because service providers can't know in advance which category you fall into, so they have to treat everyone as if they're of the first sort."
