If I don't post 'em, I can't say I called it. (And I could go down in flames too -- it's put up or shut up).
This year even Ann Coulter agrees with me that it's better not to see the movies up for awards if you're going to predict the Oscars. Of the movies nominated this year I've seen Cinderella Man and Walk the Line. I'm now famous (at least with my wife) for having reviewed Brokeback Mountain and not seen it. I think it will win best adapted screenplay, but if I'm correct about Hollywood PC movies, it won't win Best Picture -- and shouldn't from what I've heard.
The real problem isn't Hollywood PC though. It's the same problem with rock/pop music. It's just very very weak and seemingly getting worse. But still we have to pick a best picture:
Entertainment Weekly and Roger Ebert are my two influences. This year I'm going to agree with a combination of their picks.
Best Picture:
Crash
Best Actor:
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Best Actress:
Reese Witherspoon
Supporting Actor:
George Clooney
Supporting Actress:
Rachel Weisz
Best Director:
Ang Lee
I hate predicting the lesser awards, particularly the best song -- worse than the Grammy's -- but Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana will win best adapted screenplay, the penguin movie will win best documentary, and Dollie Parton's song from Transamerica will win.
