 Nice essay under the "Scan" section of The American Enterprise magazine which I highly recommend. It's called Hating America As Usual by Brandon Bosworth, an associate editor at TAE who lives in Hawaii. You might recall that our tenured CU professor, Ward Churchill, traveled to Hawaii recently at U of H expense to give a lecture there.
Bosworth seems to get it that the problem isn't just what Churchill says, writes, and apparently believes. It's that Churchill his SOP at not just CU but most of our Universities. Tuitions are rising much faster than the cost of living and our universities justify this by pointing to the "increased quality" of their educational experience. But Ward Churchill is the rule, not the exception in the humanities that control university power structure.
Here's what Bosworth learned at the University of Hawaii lecture -- the Ward Churchill beliefs and scholarship that the University and students paid for:
- Everything is America's fault
- There are no innocent Americans
- I am a poster boy for academic freedom
- I am being targeted because the Right wants to eliminate "ethnic studies, women's studies, and queer studies"
- American's have a big streak of Nazism in them
This disturbed and hate-filled pseudo-Indian and pseudo-scholar will not be eliminated by attacking what he says. He and his ilk will wrap themselves in the first amendment successfully. I will fight to defend his right to express such opinions, but they don't have to be as a tenured professor at the University of Colorado.
