The American Council on Science and Health

This plug could go under medical, myths, reviews, or even legal so we're going to put it in the HL Mencken section. I just received a booklet from The American Council on Science and Health entitled Facts Versus Fears. The concept of fear ties together a number of threads recently starting with Michael Crichton's book, State of Fear. Fear is used by both government and non-governmental groups alike in order to get people to believe certain things and behave certain ways. It's sort of like advertising only more subtle and often more effective. It's the opposite of science and reason. It's used more often these days by liberals but it wasn't always so and knows no political boundaries.

The web is full of information. So full, in fact, that it's hard to tell where to go, who to trust, what's accurate, and who's just got an agenda or just wants to sell you something. If you're looking for information on the real deal for everything from Alar to Z-particles (OK, I made that one up in order to have something with "Z" in it), then you should go to the ACSH's website and search for it. I note they don't have a section in the book on "crack babies", "silicone disease", or radon but you can probably find it on the website.

disclaimer: I have contributed to the ACSH but have no financial interest in it or its website.
