Found another great one overlooked from last year. This time it's found courtesy of Chuck Mitchell, music industry man and critic extraordinaire who knows all and hears all, at least as much as is humanly possible. Medeski, Martin & Wood have been around for quite awhile and have developed a niche between instrumental rock and classical and jazz. Mitchell describes their new CD as X-jazz and I would agree. It's only jazz if you have to force it into a category or genre but it's not like either classic jazz, smooth jazz, or some totally avant garde jazz. It's X the Unknown.
A couple of standout cuts are "Anonymous Skulls" which will be making Dr. Reptile's Halloween Greatest Hits this year and a cut called "Miami Gato" which I can't quite place but seems to emanate from Oingo Boingo or some such dark recess of unclassifiable melodies. It's not space rock. It's not electronic or techno. It's X-jazz. Check it out if you dare.
