DOWN AND DIRTY?
BOOMER OR
BOOMERANG
IT WILL BE
SPECIALOn the day Speaker Lyons
announced the date of the special session, Monday, January 26, (impeachment
committee members will be announced next week), the top political story on
Thursday was news that David Boomer, a political operative for Rowland was
snooping into the financial backgrounds of top democratic legislative leaders. I
think there was a lot of media overreaction (I'm guilty too) to what Boomer was
doing. The guv (and the people working for him) is trying to save his
job.....looking into the financial background (the records are open to everyone)
of his political enemies was to be expected. In fact, Democrats have been doing
the same thing and looking at Rowland's public financial records (to the best of
my knowledge the hot tub was never listed by the
guv.)Some think Boomer should have
sent a less known surrogate to do his digging. Others think Boomer knew exactly
what he was doing, and wanted it publicly known that he was checking up on
Democrats. As for the thinking that this type of political underground
operation lends credibility to concerns that Rowland is trying to intimidate
Democrats, well yeah! Despite the governor saying he wants to be about the
business of government, he really is in campaign mode and in this campaign to
hang on to his job, it won't be
pretty.SPEAKING OF
CAMPAIGNINGBoomer told me that he
is coordinating a number of efforts to build grassroots support for Rowland. He
says they would love to run radio and TV ads, but have been unable to raise the
necessary cash, due partly to Rowland's political troubles and because a lot of
Republicans are strapped for cash because the Big Guy George W is coming in for
a $2,000 a guest fundraiser at the end of the month in Greenwich.
BEYOND THE
HEADLINESWe have a really good
show this week. Of course Rowland is the top topic, but we also breakdown media
coverage of the scandal so far. And we even talk a little presidential politics.
I admit I haven't been paying as much attention to national politics. I better
get up to speed I'm supposed to be in New Hampshire in about a week (unless
there is big news on the Rowland front). Beyond the Headlines http://wb20.trb.com/news/wtxx-news-beyondtheheadlines,0,1040833.storygallery?coll=wtxx-ent-1
