Prior to receiving my tile from Lesh, I had constructed the basic outline of my tile in my head. I had determined a specific direction I would go. The idea I had and the basic configuration of my small contribution was taking on more and more of a specific mental shape. I hadn't decided on any specific imagery, that would come later. I was convinced that I knew what I would be going for. As I said, that was before I received my tile with its three edges to match.

I received the tile late in the evening and immediately became concerned as to how I could manage to merge the three very different edges with the vague mental image of what I thought I had planned.

One edge showed what appeared to be spikes combined with amorphous colors and textures. The second edge appeared to be a macro image with warm toned stones.

The last edge was basically a monotone, flat area with some ambiguous detail. After seeing this, all the preconceived imagery I had disappeared.

I began by creating what I thought of as a trial merge of the edges, not really planning on creating anything final; but I kept going, merging, importing images, applying filters and blending modes etc., etc. until it was 4:00 in the morning and way past my bedtime. The tile was essentially completed. The next day I spent some time tweaking and cleaning it up prior to uploading it for Lesh. Once I started working on the tile the excitement grew and I had to keep going. My original idea fell by the wayside and the tile took on a creative life of its own

I had almost forgotten how much fun working on Mosaic 1 had been. This process brought it all back, vividly.
