The tile I created was inspired by the ongoing crisis in Ethiopia where millions of people are under the threat of starvation. For two years, I have been sponsoring a child in Ethiopia through a Christian humanitarian organization called World Vision. The child, who is featured in the tile, is named Elias Shamil. In light of the magnitude of the crisis, it doesn’t make much of a difference in dollars to sponsor one child in Africa. However, it has put a face on a problem that is usually only talked about with statistics. This has caused me to be more sensitive to the issue, and to be more willing to talk with others about it.

As a war against Iraq becomes more of a possibility, it is my hope that we don’t forget about the many people who are at death’s door in other parts of the world, simply because they don’t have enough food. I also hope that in our abundance we might seek ways to help the need.
