Stairmaster DebatesThis morning at the gym, bad breath dude got on
the stairmaster next to me and started talking about everything from the news on
CNN to the woman in front of us' "Tush."
hmph.
Anyway, we had an interesting discussion about immigration. He noted that the immigration issue was ridiculous, and I noted that corporate America would fall apart if they couldn't pay all these people low wages under the table untaxable.... he noted that since Mexico was so corrupt and screwed up, thats why so many leave to come here. I noted that since we are all descended from illegal immigrants, what's the difference? He said his grandma came here legally through Ellis Island. I asked him if the Native Americans invited her before they were nearly wiped out. He pointed out that you can't go too far back in history (always what the victor says!). I said that I simply want to see a system developed in which we can welcome anyone who wants to come to the this country and work. Interesting discussion, that really goes nowhere in the end. We depend on illegal immigrants to accept pittance wages to do jobs few Americans will do (and which corporations want to be untaxed for), and Latin American countries depend on immigrants sending money home to infuse cashflow into their economies, which in turns allows them to produce and export and import to the US - thus creating a deadly cycle that sucks us ever further in. *sigh* At any rate, Dave and I are also debating buying a stairmaster for the basement. I like the idea of adding a half hour of cardio while watching HGTV at night..... its just that good ones like they have at the gym are in the thousands of dollars range..... Current and recent reads:
Evan Thomas et. al. discuss the ins and outs of the campaigns of 2004 from inside them both - a fast read on the plane and made me want to scream with the accounts of missteps on the part of the Kerry team!
Currently reading Walsch's new book - it is really helping me to solidify my current angst over spiritual direction and figure out where I am going and growing. I highly recommend this as a read to everyone who wants to leap forward, or at least delve deeper into their understanding of God and our place in the universe.
