Myth or fact?

Even I don't know everything about workouts....

So I read this article years ago about how doing real squats (not the ones on those little machines) are great for you because since they force you to pull pretty much every muscle in your body into use to stabilize yourself, your body releases more testosterone, so they have this amazing anabolic effect.

Now I ran into a trainer-type guy (that I went on a date with a few years ago) who said the same thing.... and he has bulked up a bit since we went on that date.... but I wonder if its really true....

When I was doing real squats I found that I was all-around stronger. Especially when I was at the point for a brief period that I could squat 3 plates on each side of the bar (if my math isn't failing me that was 315 lbs). OK - so I only did 1 set, and it was like 4 reps and I had someone behind me in case I fell and hurt myself.... but nonetheless.

But right now I am doing machines that simulate squats because I have been finding squatting very difficult.... so I am debating taking it up again, just using lower weights and seeing if it benefits the overall workout ....

Any thoughts from people in the know?
