A Letter for Gay Republicans

I never understood them anyway.

I don't get gay republicans.

Let's be clear. I can sorta understand being a follower of the politics of self-interest (It goes like this - I am a rich gay man - I want to stay rich and get richer, give me lotsa tax breaks... screw everyone else - I don't wanna dis my gay brothers, but some of y'all have that attitude out there - lesbians typically are more sensitive, so I think there are very few lesbian republicans)... but how on earth can you support a party that caters to those who want to destroy you? That would prefer that we had all died of AIDS in the 80s? That refuses to give our relationships any recognition at all and wants to take them away from those who have fought so hard to enlighten their state governments and voters to celebrate love in all its forms?

OK the log cabin boys are singing "We have to change the party from within, and I am a defense-minded fiscal conservative, and the republicans are good at those things - we can change their social views...."

Um, no we cannot. You have been trying for a long time and Bushie, in his state of the union, still wants to prohibit same-sex marriage forever.

So, I urge all gay men who work for evil Satan-controlled republicans (and the democrats who act like they are too)... to tender the following letter to their bosses immediately:

Dear Boss,

You may not know this about me, but it's become quite important for me to tell you something about me. I am gay.

I have to tell you now because you are supporting the federal marriage amendment, and that threatens to forever strip me of a fundamental human right.

I have worked for you for some time, and enjoy doing so. I support so many of your fiscal and defense policies, and even agree with many of your social programs. But on this social issue, I cannot. I feel as though I am under attack, and by someone whom I have trusted and supported, at the expense of friendships and relationships, as many gay and lesbian people cannot stomach gay republicans.

The Federal Marriage Amendment, should it be ratified by 38 states, will go into effect for a very long time. it will prevent any kind of recognition of the kind of relationship I am in/I want to enjoy. It goes so far as to strip the people who have been legally joined and recognized in places where it is legal, by the will of the people (for they can vote out those who made it so) of what they have gained and enjoyed.

Marriage is not under attack. For heavens sake, same-gender-loving people simply want to enter into a sanctioned, lifelong contract that acknowledges their relationship, grants them survivorship rights, gives them the basic contractual privileges that heterosexual couples receive when they wed. No one wants to destroy marriage. We want to celebrate its virtues!

The native countries of our WASP forebears have already become more enlightened about gay and lesbian people than we are in the US - some already recognize and support same-sex unions. Why can we not follow their lead?

I urge you to cease all support, and encourage your colleagues to do the same, for any further restriction on same-sex civil unions or marriages. DOMA will prevent any state that doesn't want to grant gay and lesbian people basic rights from having to do so.

I must inform you that this letter shall, in the event that you agree to co-sponsor any bill that could become a Federal Marriage Amendment, serve as my immediately effective resignation. It will no longer be possible for me to work for you if it is so clearly your desire to strip me and those like me of a fundamental, basic human privilege that you and so many of your colleagues enjoy and flaunt in my face every day here at work. Stop the madness, and stop the Federal Marriage Amendment.

Sincerely,

(sign your name here, gay republican)

For your convenience, you may copy and paste this text into a word processor and put your name and the current date on it and give it to bossman TOMORROW. Aren't I nice?

Forward this to all the gay republicans you know.; Forward it to HRC and NGLTF. Make people send exactly this kind of letter so that the freakoid, religious-right-leaning, mean-spirited, nasty republicans decide not to do this. WE MUST ACT TO STOP THIS NOW, or we will spend 100 years trying to undo this damage. Gay republicans, I hold you especially accountable if this thing passes. We have been warning you about them for years, and you voted for and supported them anyway.

Do it. Do it now. Change the world. Stand up for yourself, for cryin out loud.
