| First off, you have to understand that I am not attracted to this sub-genre of film. I am not necessarily turned off by it, but it just doesn't attract me. I would not have rented the DVD if someone hadn't told me about the use of Esperanto in the film. On the otherhand, I watched the movie Gattaca without knowing that Esperanto was used in the public address system of the corporation and was taken pleasantly by surprise when I heard it. | I have heard it theorized that the director/writer of the movie, David S. Goyer, merely wanted to use Esperanto as a "generic foreign language." Most big cities are multi-lingual. But going through the DVD slowly, one can see that the language actually has a larger presence in the movie than the few lines spoken at the newsstand and the clips from the movie Incubus. | Mi

| I had to replay several times the scene where Kris Kristofferson buys a newspaper from the vendor, and they are both speaking Esperanto. | Kristofferson replies, and I'm
pretty sure what he was supposed to say
was, "Espere ke ne." Kristofferson doesn't pronounce the final e in
Espere and he slurs the words together so it comes out "Esperke ne"
which was the reason I had to listen to it repeatedly, because that
just doesn't make sense. |

| Interestingly, the English subtitle reads, "Let's hope not." If I were to say that phrase in Esperanto, it would be "Ni esperu ke ne." I've never been able to compare a foreign language with the English subtitle translation before, and I wonder if this minor misrepresentation is common. | Interese,

| Another reason I had to listen repeatedly is that when Kristofferson buys the Globe, according to the subtitle, he tells the vendor, "I'll take this one, too." The verb "to take" in Esperanto is "preni". He should have said something along the lines of "Mi prenas ĉitiun, ankaŭ." I don't know what verb Kristofferson used, but it wasn't "preni" or "havi" or even "aĉeti." After listening to it five or six times, I still don't know what verb he used. Then again, perhaps he used a very appropriate verb that I'm simply not familiar with. If you know what verb he used, please let me know. I'm not an expert, and I often have a difficult time understanding Kristofferson even when he speaks English. | Alia

| Some of the signs in the
background are also written in English and
Esperanto. I already mentioned the one in the car crash scene,
and the majority of the rest can be seen at the police station.
