Review

This interesting double LP from the impulse! dedication series released in 1978 ties together several strands of Shepp's discography from 1965. Much of the music presented here had been previously released - 'The Pickaninny' from 'On This Night' and 'Malcolm, Malcolm Semper Malcolm' from 'Fire Music'. All of side 3 and track 1 of side 4 are from the 1965 Newport Jazz festival performance that spawned 'The New Thing At Newport'.

Which leaves 3 takes of 'The Chased' and an alternate 'The Mac Man'. Slim pickings? I think not. The 3 takes of 'The Chased' might as well be 3 different tracks, especially the third which stands out due to Izenon's incredible bass solo. Shepp's playing is as firey and intense as the album's name would suggest, and is up there with anything he did at that time. It's great that these takes finally got a release, albeit 13 years too late.
