As always there were refreshments and snacks. Thanks once again to Zehr's for their kind use of their Community Room! +++ Feature Presenter: Meg Archibald of Smith's Medical Canada - Deltec Cozmo insulin Pump 1-866-66-COZMO ( 1-866-662-6966) presented the Deltec Cozmo Insulin Pump and it's new blood glucose meter attachment! Meg gave us a brief history of Smith's Medical. Founded in 1851 the firm introduced it first infusion pumps in 1982. A few of the technical specifics she mentioned was that the Cozmo provides delivery of basal every 3 minutes in order to reduce occlusions. The pump has four different basal profiles (each nameable by the pump user for easy insulin pump programing). Basal delivery can be in increments as small as 0.05 u which is ideal for young children and people with very high insulin sensitivity. It's waterproof, uses a single AAA battery and can use any infusion set and tubing on the market! Temporary basals can be programmed (by it's easy to read menu driven programing) for up to 72 hours. Meg added, with some pride, that John Walsh (co-author, Pumping Insulin) is a consultant on the design and programing of the Deltec Cozmo insulin pump! In addition to the above features, the Cozmo and the Animas are the only insulin pumps on the market which provide a customized "duration of insulin action". A user may also program customized ,eal boluses to cover various difficult to bolus for foods, such as pizza as well as add a personalized name for each custom bolus. A real treat for a mom on the go! The Cozmo also provides automatic calculation of correction boluses and warns the user if he/she has programmed too high a correction bolus - ie: Insulin On Board (already infused) is enough to cover the apparent high bg. After reminding us that these were just a few of the many Cozmo features, Meg showed us the (yet to be health Canada approved) Freestyle blood glucose meter for attachment and automatic communication with the Cozmo. Cool! It clips onto the pump and is only a few tenths of an inch thick! it communicates with the pump via a small IR port on the back of the Cozmo. It is anticipated that the new blood glucose meter will be available in Canada very shortly. Meg kindly lingered with us answering all of our questions and sharing many insulin pump stories. Thanks, Meg! +++ Insulin Pumpers Canada - Simcoe County Insulin Pumpers on Rogers community TV! Thanks to the kind efforts of Greg Boden and Paul Beckwith we had a place on Rogers TV in November!
