Making a fact book about the countries of Africa

Databases 3.2: Use database applications to create documents related to content a areas

Activity Description
Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 and research info about all of the African nations in order to make a database full of pertinent information about each country.

Content Area
Students have used the Internet to research the geography and different characteristics of each African nation in order to create a fact book about each country

Computer Skill
Students will use the Internet to research about African countries.  They will use a database to make a fact book about each country.

How Activity Integrates Computer Skills with Classroom Content
Students will learn about all of the countries in Africa.  They will find basic information as well as info about the people, religion, society, economy, etc.

Content Area
Students will learn how to research a country and how to work in groups to formulate a database structure that will suit their needs.

Computer Skill
Students will use the Internet to research about African countries.  They will use a database to make a fact book about each country.

Teacher Input
Teacher will show students a fact book that the teacher creates.  Teacher will remind students to look for additional information that they think is interesting and try to find more of the same type of data for each country.

Content Area
In class, students will be shown what some information about a country that they should highlight. They need to find info about the capitals, area, transportation, religions, social structure, political system, population, imports and exports, and whatever fact they find that they think are important.  They should try to find all of the same types of info for each nation.

Computer Skill
In the computer lab, students will be shown how to use a database and create one.

Independent Practice
Students will work together in and out of class to research information.  They may use the Internet and books as well.

Content Area
Students will continue to learn about the different African nations on their own and in groups.  They will use the Internet and books to do so.

Computer Skill
In groups, students will use database features to make their database attractive and easy to use.

Closure
A day will be set aside to have students review eachother's fact books.

Content Area
Students will use other classmate's databases and test its usability and interface.  Input from their peers will help formulate their grade.

Computer Skill
Students will export their databases through the network and access others through the network as well as fill out a rubric online and submit that to the teacher and the students who created the database that is being reviewed.
