HyperStudio Tips

Multimedia sounds impressive and difficult, but programs like HyperStudio make the process easy enough for young children. Creating multimedia is fun, inventive, and enables students to take ownership of knowledge. North Carolina standards also require multimedia skills as a component of the curriculum at all grade levels.

  • Many other programs, including PowerPoint, can make multimedia projects.  HyperStudio is more straightforward and easier for kids to use.
  • A multimedia project is called a stack; each page of a stack is called a card
  • Holding down the Ctrl button and pressing M will hide/show the menu bar.  You can’t do much of anything without it.
  • From the Tools menu, you can hold down the mouse button and “tear-off” the Tools.  This way, the Tools window can hover on your screen for easier access.
  • You can create a button, pictures, text box or hyperlink from the Objects menu.
  • After creating an object (button, picture, text box) clicking outside of it will allow you to customize (change colors, text, what the object does, etc).  You can edit text from within a text box, but you cannot edit text that is written directly on the card.
  • To modify an object later, select the corresponding button from the Tools and click on the object that you wish to modify.
  • Buttons are what HyperStudio is all about.  Make sure each page has a button that allows you to go forward, back, and sometimes home.  They can also make sounds and play movies!
  • A card works very much like a web page.  As you click around, you get more information.
  • There are multitudes of ways to customize your stack.  Don’t be afraid to try new things!
