one year on-line!![]() Hard
to believe, but today is the one-year anniversary of this website. Since many
of you were not reading yet back then, I'll re-post that first entry below.
Last night was also full of very LOUD fireworks, and our new 2nd story apartment
in the middle of Oakland put us (I'm fairly certain) in one of the most "active"
areas. Meera wouldn't come out from under the bed most of the
night.
I've found it really interesting keeping this online journal. Knowing that there were people from all over the world reading about my life . . . receiving mail from strangers who just happened to stumble across the site . . . Being reconnected with old friends who had no other way to find me . . . Sometimes I really love the internet (and sometimes I don't!) but sometimes it really makes me smile when I see how something that seems so cold and unfeeling can actually bring people together and provide space in which relationships can grow. Really cool. Anyway, here's a little bit of history: My first
journal entry, Harry Potter, 4th of July, and a spelling bee . .
.
I've been wanting to keep an on-line journal for years, and I'm finally getting around to it. If you're new to the whole on-line journal thing, check out my favorite one: Neil Gaiman's Journal . The one you're reading right now was inspired by his. He writes in it nearly every day, is one of my favorite authors, and has a HUGE daily readership. Folks write in with questions all the time, and he responds to a couple of them each day. By the way, feel free to write me with questions, jokes, stories, or just to catch up. Here's a link: Email me. If you definitely do not want to see your email posted on the web, just be sure to let me know. Fourth of July weekend out here in California. Lots of really LOUD fireworks last night. Do you think they get louder in years where we've been at war? I guess the males of the species, especially the ones who really enjoying blowing shit up, feel somewhat more vindicated in setting off explosive devices when our government has been doing it on our dime. Corey is away visiting his family, so I treated myself to a movie Thursday night. "Spellbound". Really wonderful documentary about eight kids who made it to the national spelling bee. The director did a great job picking eight extremely different kids from widely varying backgrounds and telling a story that was, at different times, funny, tense, touching, and joyful. Everyone in the theater seemed to enjoy it as much as I did, and I would eagerly watch it again. Shameless Apple Plug: The director for Spellbound edited the whole movie in his living room using a Powermac G4 and Final Cut Pro. Oh, and I almost forgot. Finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on Thursday. I guess it's the mark of a good storyteller when the end of the story causes a deep sadness that the story is over. I'll write more about the book later. -Doug Posted: Sat - July 5, 2003 at 12:21 PM Posted: Mon - July 5, 2004 at 11:30 AM |
