first day backAlmost didn't make it today. Four hours of
sleep; Stevie the Cold Virus still working overtime; no food in the house, so
had to go without breakfast . . .
Not a good way to kick off the new semester. And the first day of any semester is always
boring, too. Handing out course info sheets, going over the syllabus, classroom
policies, etc. No sir, I almost didn't make
it.
Then, in my last class of the day, one of my students looked up at me and said, You're not going to be boring, like all the other teachers, right? "How's that?" I replied. Lectures, all the time. Nothing but lectures. The rest of the class chimed in their agreements that most of the other teachers did nothing but lecture. This wasn't the usual "teacher-bashing" that sometimes happens. They really just sounded unhappy with the way their classes are taught. I assured them that we would have opportunities for other things as well, and that much would depend on their willingness to participate blah blah blah But inside, I was smiling. Because they sounded hungry! And anything is possible when students are hungry. Can't wait for tomorrow. Posted: Mon - January 5, 2004 at 09:01 PM |
