the consequences of assigning an essay test right before grades are due:

1. You have to read them all.

2. You have to read them all.

3. You have to read them all.

4. You have to read them all.

5. You have to read them all.

[far too many hours later]

61. You have to read them all.

62. You have to read them all.

Don't get me wrong at all. I was actually really impressed with most of the essays, but definitely too many to read all at once. As the wife of the man who had videotaped her husband being viciously attacked by a deer for trying to impersonate a lady deer (no joke!) once said: "I'll never let him do that again!"

I also read through about 50 extra credit papers on The Passion of the Christ. I was even more impressed with these. Amazing the amount of effort these kids will go to for "extra credit". Fantastic work. Some were really moved by the experience of seeing the movie (which was not a requirement, by the way) and others made really insightful comments about all of the articles that have been written about it.

Many students wrote about how emotional the movie was for them. Some wrote about being angry and disgusted with it. And one had kind of a spiritual awakening after the movie.

All of it was fascinating reading, down to the last word. I just wish it hadn't been crunch time so that I could spend more time enjoying it.
