happy news!

Thursday night, in Las Vegas, my brother Brian got down on one knee and popped the question. He and Debbie are now engaged!!!! Congratulations, both of you!

Mom's email said that he flew down to Vegas to surprise her (she was visiting with family) and he actually got down on one knee (he's a traditionalist) in front of a fountain. That's all I know at this point, as he's still in Vegas. I'll give you the whole story when I know it.

Those stories are great, aren't they? Those defining moments in a relationship that you never forget. The moments that get told over and over again at family parties. I still remember how Dad proposed to Mom.

Here's what I remember of the story (Mom, you'll have to fill in the details . . .)

I know it happened in a parking lot, and possibly near Mom's old VW Beetle. Dad came walking out to the parking lot with two bottles of champagne, one sticking out of each pocket of his jacket. I believe he got down on one knee, but I can't be sure. And I remember that one of the bottles fell out and broke before they could open it.

What's interesting about my memory of that story is that there isn't much there. It looks like I forgot many of the details. But whenever I first heard the story, I could immediately picture my Dad's face in my mind. His big grin as he came walking out to the car. Maybe a sheepish smile when the bottle broke. And as I think of the story, I can still see that face in my mind. Did my mom cry, I wonder? (I'm not a betting man, but if I were . . . )

Corey cried. I remember it like it was yesterday. Right in front of the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. (I got down on one knee.)

More of that story later . . .
