Spider-Man 2

We saw Spider-Man 2 last night, and yes, it really was better than the first. The CGI team really got their stuff together with the "flying-through-New-York" sequences, not to mention all of the battles with Dr. Octopus. Tobey Maguire really seemed to come into his own with the character of Peter Parker, too. And Aunt May was terrific. I agree with Peter David, who said that her monologue on heroism was worth the price of admission.

I think what I liked most about the film is that the filmmakers really pushed the depth of the average superhero movie. This one had a little more pull between the light and dark; a little more gray blurring the lines between the two. I liked that. Well done.

On the other hand, some of their themes got a little repetitive. Yes, yes. We get that Peter can't have a girlfriend because his enemies would stop at nothing to hurt the people he cares about. (Clearly, though, his friends are in danger when he's just Peter Parker, too, so that theory doesn't really hold water.) And yes, yes, we really get how upset young Harry Osborne is at Spidey for supposedly killing his father. Whatever. Kind of rammed it down our throats. (Not necessary.)

Overall, though, terrific summer movie. Loved it.
