San Francisco's de Young Museum
A visit to San Francisco's de Young Museum
October 14, 2006

The museum celebrated it's 1st birthday since its renovation
Clad in perforated copper sheeting, it will acquire a green patina with age
The entrance gate continues the "perforated" theme
Built "earthquake-proof", even the furniture is part of the show
More perforated copper sheeting, this from the observation tower
Terrific live music continued through the weekend celebration
Creative architecture allows for dramatic views from every angle
More
Fitting for a castle or lodge, the carved animals on this fireplace are amazing
Recognize this? It's the railroad in now "Old" Sacramento, circa 1860
"The Peaceable Kingdom"
"Justice"
"The Trial of John Brown", the post-Civil War abolitionist
"The Last Moments of John Brown"
An early cigar store figure. I'd have gotten it for you, Michael, but...
We discovered an exhibit of Polynesian antiquities
I was mesmerized!
If I could afford it, I'd collect these
Here's one of our favorites
Early papyrus, or taro pounded paper thin by hand, used for story telling
Loved this piece!
And this one!
An ancient Fijian kava bowl in the shape of a man
Believed to be a deity, probably a goddess
Now, that's interesting!
Giant stone head
The entrance to the "Quilts of Gee's Bend" exhibit (No photos allowed)
The sculpture garden. Here, a giant safety pin
Dawn with the pin
Loved these "people"
There are three
Glazed ceramic apples
Henry Moore
Joan MirĂ³
An artist from Papua, New Guinea, gave carving demonstrations
A huge stainless steel sculpture that looks like a meteorite
The observation tower
More copper sheeting
A jazz trio entertained us during our patio lunch
They were quite good
Bass solo
The guy was good!
As was the drummer! A nice way to enjoy lunch.
